ACT: Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

  • In ACT we enhance your psychological flexibility through experiential therapeutic exercises and the use of metaphors.

  • ACT is a transdiagnostic approach helpful for those with mental health problems such as depression, anxiety, and PTSD.

  • ACT is also effective for work in couples and marital therapy as there is an emphasis on values, boundaries, and acceptance.

In each psychotherapy session you will engage with your problems in the following ways:

  • Enhancing your present state awareness through therapist led mindfulness exercises.

  • Recognizing how focusing your energy towards getting rid of or trying to control your problems does not work long-term.

  • Identifying and clarifying your values system and then participate in action behaviors towards those values.

  • Learning new ways to defuse and untangle yourself from problematic ideas you may have about yourself which can maintain and worsen your feelings of sadness, worry, or fear.

  • Practice stepping back, take an observer’s stance, and learn to hold your unpleasant internal experiences instead of fighting with them.
